Fellow Calgary Circus Performer, TriXtan and I have been training hard to put together an interesting, powerful and highly choreographed partner acrobatic act for our show. We are very lucky to have an amazing coach and some great help from fellow circus performers. I think Jessie explained the day best when he said

“after the session they[our troupe] had planned with their photographer had fallen through, (which i can NOT stress enough I was incredibly happy to find out!) and they needed promo shots like NOW! We worked with Fire. We worked with glow props. And we worked on GRINDING her abs.”

After a long day of rehearsal I’ve come home to work on my card manipulation skills. Nothing makes you feel like a nerd than drilling false shuffles and watching star trek but it is definatly my idea of a great Saturday night.

Calgary fire-eater sets record in Italy:

CALGARY — Some people wince at eating soup that’s a smidgen too hot. Carisa Hendrix held a flaming torch — fire side down — between her teeth for two minutes.

Let that sink in.

She swears she’s not insane — she jokes her mom had her tested — but it’s easy for people to think she’s slightly crazy when she explains the trick.

“The full torch is engulfed in fire, but because underneath the fire, it’s slightly cooler, you try to hold your face as close to horizontally underneath the torch to avoid the worst part of the flame, and you roll your lips back to try to not burn and blister them,” she said about “The Torch Teething Duration.”

“The idea is to try to withstand the full heat of the fire torch in your teeth without it burning up your mouth.”

The 25-year-old Calgary woman started fire-eating nine years ago, after seeing it performed during a volunteer event.

She admits back then, she wasn’t the epitome of cool.

“It was the way that I dealt with bullying and put up with the weird pressure from home,” she said. “I had this cool thing that I did that none of my friends could do. It made me feel special.”

Soon, she was a magician’s assistant and travelling the world showing off her skills.

From the age of 16, she was self-sufficient with money from her shows and lessons, paying for rent and putting herself through college.

She got a call from a friend earlier this year about an Italian TV show where people attempt to break world records.

Initially, she believed the world record for the torch teething duration was only around 30 seconds, before being told by Guinness two weeks before the taping that it was actually 92.75 seconds.

“When the record got changed … basically, everyone said if you come back with nothing, we don’t blame you,” she said. “But that just spurs you on more because of how amazing it would be to get that record.”

In April, she flew to Rome for the taping.

She admits there were three times she wanted to yank out the flaming torch, which almost looks like a marshmallow on fire. Each second seemed like an eternity.

Two minutes and one second later, she had her own Guinness World Record.

“It’s painful in a way that’s so odd, that at least for me, my brain can’t understand it,” she said. “It feels like there is another person inside my head screaming ‘stop, this is the worst, stop it, stop it’ — the fight or flight reaction in my brain.

“I have to forcefully keep my hand down so it doesn’t reach for the torch, because at a certain point, I want to forcefully rip the torch out of my mouth.”

The show finally aired last week in Italy, although most of her friends already knew the result.

When you come back from a world record opportunity with a big smile on your face, it’s easy to decipher she accomplished her goals.

I’m taking a slight detour to present an image that’s had a little more work than normal done to it. Just returned home from the opening of Fairy Tales, Monsters and the Genetic Imagination featuring pieces by Patricia Piccinini. These nights are great because you pay what you can (so it could be free) and there’s drinks available and live music to accompany the exhibition. To my local friends who complain they have no money to to do things: Look for these nights at the Glenbow.

Anyways, I’ve been playing with a series idea for awhile and I think the exhibition tonight has given me a few ideas of where to go with it. Here’s an experimentation of the main character with Carisa.

Information is not knowledge: A Moment of Contemplation

This morning I stayed up to watch the sunrise. As I stood in the doorway with a fresh cup of coffee in hand, taking in the warm glow and the stillness, I was suddenly stuck by the sight of something unexpected.

I watched as a car drove up the street and stopped in the middle of the road a few houses down. A man stepped out of the vehicle and tossed a rolled newspaper onto the front steps of a house across the street, which was actually quite an impressive feat since the door was a good twenty feet away. Then the man then got back into his car and drove away out of sight.

This seemingly unremarkable moment may have gone unnoticed except that it had roused a curious thought in my mind “wow, newspapers are really dead”. Nothing spelled it out more than realizing paper routes must now be done by vehicle since only one house in three blocks was interested. I used to have a paper route myself and even the worst block would have four to five subscribers.

Our digital age and our digital tastes are changing so many aspects of our everyday lives, even as I write this I’m sitting on the step typing away at my laptop. I hope we take moments to ask questions about the impact of these changes.

Is it better to be served up the news as filtered by one media entity like a newspaper or to have access to all the opinions and information on the Web? I often wonder if the vast abundance of data allows us to pick and choose what we like and create any narrative that suits us.

As Albert Einstein put it “Information is not knowledge.”
